Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei is currently hospitalized in critical condition after a violent attack by her Kenyan partner, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, who allegedly doused her with petrol and set her on fire.
The incident occurred at Cheptegei’s home in Endebess, Trans-Nzoia County, Kenya, on Sunday, when her partner reportedly sneaked into her house while she and her children were at church. Upon her return, he attacked her, resulting in severe burns for both of them as the blaze spread.
Cheptegei suffered burns over 75% of her body and is now in the intensive care unit at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret, Kenya.
Her partner, who was also burned in the attack, is receiving treatment at the same hospital. Police are investigating the incident, which follows a history of domestic disputes between the couple, reportedly over property matters.
The attack on Cheptegei highlights ongoing concerns about gender-based violence in the region, an issue that has affected many women in Kenya and Uganda.
