Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei has tragically passed away after suffering severe burn injuries in an attack allegedly carried out by her former boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, in Trans Nzoia County, Kenya. The incident took place at her home when Marangach reportedly doused her in petrol and set her on fire after a confrontation over a land dispute. Cheptegei sustained burns covering 80% of her body and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret, Kenya. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries due to multiple organ failures.

Marangach, who also suffered burns in the attack, is currently hospitalized in the same ICU. The incident has sparked outrage and calls for justice, with many expressing condolences and mourning the loss of a promising athlete.
