The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has approved charges against several allies and aides of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. They are accused of financing the anti-government protests that took place in June 2024.
According to reports, these individuals, including MPs James Gakuya and Benjamin Gathiru, former MPs Ngunjiri Wambugu and George Theuri, and Gachagua’s secretary Pius Munene, allegedly mobilized funds to support protesters who opposed the Finance Bill 2024.
The ODPP stated there is sufficient evidence to charge them with conspiracy to commit a felony under Section 393 of the Penal Code. Additionally, a separate investigation into potential money laundering and financial crimes has been recommended.
Gachagua, however, has dismissed the charges, labeling them as politically motivated attempts to tarnish his reputation amidst impeachment talks.
