Kericho Governor Eric Mutai has been impeached by the County Assembly, with 31 members voting in favor of the motion. The impeachment is based on accusations of gross constitutional violations, misuse of public resources, and abuse of office. These include claims of leading illegal land grabs, misappropriating funds, and other misconduct such as coercing women into inappropriate acts.
Mutai’s legal team attempted to halt the proceedings with a court order, but it was reportedly not served in time, and the assembly proceeded with the vote.
One of the most serious allegations involves the mishandling of funds intended for victims of the Londiani Junction tragedy, where over Ksh 9 million is unaccounted for.
The case now moves to the Senate, which will decide on Mutai’s fate.
