Ministry of sports on spot over 1 Billion Spent for hiring consultants.

The Ministry of Sports in Kenya is facing scrutiny after it was revealed that over Ksh.1 billion was spent on hiring consultants from the University of Nairobi during the 2023/24 financial year.

This expenditure, highlighted during a parliamentary session, raised concerns over the use of public funds, especially as the economy faces challenges.

Projects linked to these consultants include the Talanta Stadium and sports academies, with some questioning why in-house expertise, such as from the Public Works Department, wasn’t utilized.

In response, Sports Principal Secretary Peter Tum defended the hiring decision but mentioned that some consultancy contracts have been terminated following a review.

Additionally, Tum voiced concerns over inadequate funding for key institutions like the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) and the Kenya Academy of Sports (KAS), which are struggling financially.

This revelation comes at a time when government spending is under intense public and parliamentary scrutiny.
