Safaricom is currently exploring a partnership with Elon Musk’s Starlink to enhance internet connectivity in Kenya, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa emphasized that Starlink’s satellite technology could complement Safaricom’s existing 4G and fiber networks, which cover 95% of the country. This collaboration is seen as an opportunity to provide internet access in regions where laying fiber-optic cables is not feasible.
While Starlink’s entry into the Kenyan market has sparked competition, Ndegwa noted that Safaricom welcomes the challenge and aims to improve its services. Recently, Safaricom upgraded its home fiber packages and introduced high-speed options to remain competitive, while Starlink has launched more affordable and portable solutions, such as the Starlink Mini.
