Kenyans flock to Bomas of Kenya for public participation on DP Gachagua’s impeachment

Public participation on the impeachment process of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua took place today, October 4, 2024, at venues across the country, including the Bomas of Kenya in Nairobi. The event, intended to gather public opinions on a motion sponsored by MP Mwengi Mutuse, saw residents arriving as early as 6 a.m. to submit their views via questionnaires. Despite the early turnout, tensions arose as many participants were unable to access the main hall, leading to clashes with police outside the venue. Some attendees expressed dissatisfaction, feeling that the process lacked transparency.

This public participation process follows Gachagua’s legal challenge, where he sought to halt the proceedings, citing insufficient legislative procedures for such an impeachment process. However, the High Court allowed the exercise to continue while scheduling a mention of the case for October 9.
