Mashujaa Day, celebrated on October 20th, is a Kenyan public holiday honoring the heroes (mashujaa) who played significant roles in the country’s struggle for independence and those who have contributed to Kenya’s development. Originally known as Kenyatta Day, it was renamed in 2010 following the adoption of Kenya’s new constitution to include a broader spectrum of historical and modern-day heroes.
The day is marked by speeches from the President and other political leaders, as well as military parades, cultural performances, and the recognition of distinguished Kenyans. Each year, the celebrations take place in a different county, and the event usually highlights a theme related to national unity, economic progress, or celebrating national achievements. It’s a time for reflecting on Kenya’s journey as a nation and celebrating both known and unsung heroes.
This year 2024 Mashujaa day is being celebrated from Kwale county where president william ruto will precide over the event together with other government officials and kenyans.
