Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has dissolved the country’s parliament and called for snap legislative elections, which are required to take place within the next 90 days as per the constitution. This decision comes six months after Faye was elected on an anti-establishment platform, reflecting widespread frustration among Senegal’s youth regarding the country’s direction. The dissolution of the parliament is seen as a strategic move by Faye to overcome opposition resistance and to secure a majority for his political party, PASTEF, which would allow him to implement his promised reforms, including fighting corruption, renegotiating hydrocarbon contracts, and reviewing foreign fishing permits.
