SOUTH AFRICA ELECTIONS 2024

As South Africa today heads into its 2024 elections, several key political figures are in the spotlight as potential presidential aspirants. The ruling African National Congress (ANC) is facing unprecedented challenges, and it appears they might need to form a coalition government for the first time since 1994 due to declining support.

Cyril Ramaphosa, the current president and leader of the ANC, is seeking re-election. Despite efforts to address corruption and economic issues, his party’s popularity has waned, primarily due to ongoing issues like unemployment, energy crises, and corruption scandals.

The Democratic Alliance (DA), led by John Steenhuisen, is the main opposition party. The DA hopes to leverage its performance in local governments and its strong stance on economic reform to gain more national support

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), led by Julius Malema, is another major contender. Known for his fiery rhetoric and radical economic policies, Malema aims to attract the youth and working-class voters disillusioned with the ANC.

Additionally, former president Jacob Zuma is backing a new party, the MK party, which could split the ANC vote further at provincial levels.

With over 350 parties registered for the election and the possibility of independent candidates for the first time, the 2024 South African elections promise to be a pivotal moment in the country’s political landscape.
