Brazil’s Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has ordered a ban on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) in Brazil due to Elon Musk’s failure to appoint a legal representative for the company in the country. This decision comes after a longstanding dispute between Musk and the Brazilian judiciary over issues related to free speech, misinformation, and far-right accounts on the platform.Justice de Moraes has not only blocked access to X but also imposed fines on users who attempt to access it through Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Anyone caught using a VPN to bypass the ban will face fines of up to 50,000 reais (approximately USD 8,900) per day. Furthermore, Apple and Google have been given five days to remove X from their app stores in Brazil. The platform has been inaccessible since early Saturday, as Brazilian telecom regulators have directed internet service providers to block access. This escalates the conflict between Musk and Justice de Moraes, who accuses Musk of showing “total disrespect for Brazilian sovereignty” by failing to comply with local laws.
