KUPPET CALLS OFF TEACHERS STRIKE.

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has called off the teachers’ strike after reaching an agreement with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). This decision was made following a meeting between KUPPET officials and TSC on September 2, 2024.

The key outcomes from the meeting include the TSC’s commitment to implement the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), restore medical coverage for teachers, and work towards promoting teachers who have been in acting positions. Both KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori and TSC CEO Nancy Macharia stated that no teachers who participated in the strike would face any victimization.

The strike, which began last week, was initiated by KUPPET to push for the promotion of teachers, the absorption of 46,000 Junior Secondary School teachers on permanent and pensionable terms, and the remittance of statutory deductions and loans. The union also demanded the full implementation of the 2021-25 CBA and the payment of all outstanding emoluments for July.

The TSC also assured that they would seek alternative dispute resolution methods in accordance with the recognition agreement between the union and the commission. Further updates from KUPPET are expected following a court ruling on Thursday.
