Nay Wa Mitego faces charges for a song criticising President Suluhu’s government

Tanzanian rapper Nay Wa Mitego is facing legal challenges due to his new song, Nitasema, which criticizes President Samia Suluhu’s government. The song accuses the administration of failing to deliver on promised projects, inciting unrest by referencing government involvement in kidnappings and murders, and straining diplomatic relations by mentioning Rwanda and Congo. As a result, Nay has been charged by the National Arts Council (Basata) with four offences, including releasing the song without permission. He has been given until October 4, 2024, to respond to these charges.

This isn’t the first time Nay has faced scrutiny for his music, as his songs frequently challenge government policies, earning him multiple arrests in the past.
