Court Sentences Osinachi’s Husband to Death by Hanging for Her Murder.

Abuja, Nigeria – In a landmark ruling that has sent shockwaves across Nigeria and beyond, the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late gospel music star Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging.

Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme delivered the verdict on Monday, April 28, after finding Nwachukwu guilty of culpable homicide in the death of his wife, who passed away on April 8, 2022, under suspicious circumstances.

The prosecution presented 17 witnesses, including the couple’s two children, alongside 25 exhibits that provided evidence of long-standing abuse. The testimonies described a pattern of physical, emotional, and psychological violence inflicted by Nwachukwu, which ultimately led to Osinachi’s tragic death.

Aside from the death sentence for the homicide charge, the court also convicted Nwachukwu on several other counts, including spousal battery, criminal intimidation, and child abuse. These convictions resulted in additional prison sentences and fines.

The judge emphasized that the verdict serves as a strong message against domestic violence and a call for justice for victims who suffer in silence.

Osinachi Nwachukwu was known for her powerful voice and spiritual songs, most notably the hit track “Ekwueme.” Her death sparked public outrage and renewed conversations around gender-based violence in Nigeria.

With this judgment, many rights advocates see hope for justice and increased accountability in cases of domestic abuse.
