At least six people were killed in Somalia following a series of bomb blasts on Sunday, September 24, 2023.

The explosions occurred in Beledweyne, the capital of the Hiiraan region, which has been a target of attacks by the militant group al-Shabab.

The first explosion took place in the town’s busy market area, causing multiple casualties and significant damage.

A second blast soon followed, worsening the devastation. Al-Shabab, which has been responsible for numerous attacks across Somalia, claimed responsibility for the bombings.

The group, which is affiliated with al-Qaeda, frequently targets civilians, government officials, and military personnel in an ongoing insurgency against the Somali government. Despite local and international efforts to combat al-Shabab, the group continues to pose a serious security threat across Somalia.

The blasts have prompted security forces to heighten their vigilance, and local authorities are working to ensure safety in the aftermath of the attack.
