The teachers service commission faces a shortage of junior secondary school teachers despite recieving 314,117 applications for only 46,000 positions. The shortage is most savere in junior schools where teachers work on temporary contracts.
The government efforts to address the issue including the target to hire 116,000 teachers, has so far fallen short with only 56,000 teachers hired. Strikes and demands for permanent terms from contracted teachers have further disrupted education particularly in public JSS.
