Kenyan Official Shares AI-Generated Fake CNN Video to Justify Government’s Sudan Diplomacy

A senior Kenyan government official has come under fire after sharing an AI-generated deepfake video falsely attributed to CNN and renowned journalist Fareed Zakaria. The fabricated clip, which appeared to support Kenya’s handling of Sudan’s political crisis, was posted by Korir Sing’Oei, a top bureaucrat in Kenya’s Foreign Ministry.

The video, which has been debunked as fake, falsely depicted Zakaria endorsing Kenya’s peace diplomacy efforts amid criticism over Nairobi’s engagement with Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The militia group recently announced a parallel government in Sudan, raising concerns over Kenya’s role in the process.

Larry Madowo, a CNN International correspondent, called out Sing’Oei for sharing the misleading video, emphasizing that neither CNN nor Fareed Zakaria produced the content. Madowo further noted that Sing’Oei deleted the post without issuing an apology or clarification.

The incident has sparked concerns about the use of AI-generated misinformation in diplomatic discourse, highlighting the risks of deepfake technology in shaping public opinion and policy narratives.

As of now, neither Sing’Oei nor the Kenyan government has commented on the controversy.
