Reggae Legend Buju Banton Critises AfroBeats For Lacking Substance And Failing To Address Social And Political Issues In Africa.

Reggae legend Buju Banton recently voiced strong criticism of Afrobeats, labeling the genre as lacking substance and failing to address the pressing social and political issues facing Africa. In a candid interview on *Drink Champs*, Buju questioned the impact of Afrobeats on African societies, asking, “Tell me one Afrobeats song that can uplift us?” He argued that while countries like Kenya, South Africa, and Sudan are facing significant struggles, Afrobeats artists are not producing music that speaks to these challenges or provides hope and inspiration to their listeners.Buju Banton lamented that contemporary African music, including Afrobeats, has become too focused on materialism and superficial themes rather than using its platform to address the liberation and empowerment of African people. He drew a contrast with reggae, which he believes has historically played a vital role in advocating for the disenfranchised and speaking out on global issues. This critique aligns with similar sentiments expressed by other artists, like Burna Boy, who have also noted that much of the current Afrobeats music lacks depth and real-life experiences.
